Amara Lakhous "Scontro di civiltà per un ascensore di Piazza Vittorio"
What starts as a whodunit soon turns into a biting critique of contemporary Italian society, at turns hilarious and tragic: Lorenzo Manfredini, aka "the Gladiator" is found dead in his apartment building, and Amedeo, a fellow resident, is the primary suspect. As the other residents, who include Italians from across the peninsula and immigrants from across the globe, give their version of the story and air their prejudices, one thing remains constant: their belief in Amedeo's innocence. Written in a lively and accessible Italian by immigrant author Amara Lakhous, Scontro di civiltà per un ascensore di Piazza Vittorio brings contemporary Rome to life as it interrogates what it means to be Italian in a globalized world.
